World Drumming

Composition
6th Grade students complete their first composition online, using music notation software called Noteflight. |
Guitar
Marie Murphy students begin their study of guitar in 6th grade and continue playing each year. |
Units of Study:
- Music Appreciation: Students will learn about the instruments of the orchestra using a mystery book by Lemony Snicket, which is accompanied by an orchestra. Students create "Wanted Posters" for an orchestral instrument of their choice.
- World Music: Using Brad Shank's text Music from Around the World, students will explore the musical cultures of Mexico, the Arab World, India, China, the Caribbean, and more! Student will develop a more globalized understanding of music as they explore different styles of music, instruments, musicians, and vocabulary from around the world.
- Composition: Students will complete a variety of composition projects, including a Blues composition, a rap, and a GarageBand composition using Apple loops. Students will compose with standard music notation, graphic notation, and technology.
- World Drumming: Students will explore rhythm and hand-drumming techniques using djembes that were purchased through an Innovation Grant from the Avoca PTC.
- Guitar: Students will learn to play simple melodies and 3-string chords, building foundational guitar-playing skills that will be further developed in 7th and 8th grade.
